Live Writer above and blog editor below–
This is not nearly as awful as the earlier version . It doesn’t add a lot of extraneous coding that has to be cleaned up, but there is still some. It is Beta but certainly has some good possibilities.

Windows Live Betas - Home (No, these aren’t fish. ;) )

The website for adding extensions will not open in FireFox but only in MS Internet Explorer http://gallery.live.com/results.aspx?c=0&bt=9&pl=8&st=5

Here’s how to configure a customized tag for searching the blog (site search). Click photo to enlarge [REVISED]

Until I get the revised image in place, the correct coding should be
<a href="/?s={tag-encoded}" rel="tag">{tag}</a>

Previous client tests (2006) are here testing blog clients (off-line writing and editing)

and Referrers (referer, sic)

Editing or managing of previous posts must be done on-line, unlike Zoundry.

Actually previous posts are available in the Open Post dialog. For posts that Writer has not “seen” yet, click on your weblog name on the left side of that dialog.

    Hope that helps…

That does work. I tried it on this post, Regional Calendar

if you don’t tick the “set publish date” it will replace the original post with your edited version.

However, it did something odd to my image coding, which was stripped by WordPress including the image. The only thing left was the image alt title.

    <p><img alt="thumbnail calendar click to enlarge" src="//img498.imageshack.us/img498/1264/regionalcalendar0yh.th.gif"></p>

    <div class="wlWriterEditableSmartContent" id="0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:38926c4b-9a03-4aa8-8a9d-4c0a0f0b1091" contenteditable="false" style="padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px; padding-top: 0px">

Live Writer downloads the previous posts and drafts but only on-line (it seems to download each time I tell it to “open post”)

Actually, it should *always* replace the original post with your edited version.

For the regional calendar post, are you saying the original post contained a properly working image, but when loaded into Writer, the image was broken? Or did it look fine in Writer, and only looked broken once it showed up on your blog?

If a new date is ticked then it gets posted as a new post which is how I did the calendar example. Regional Calendar test of Live Writer

Yikes!! It does delete the other post. The original should be http://cerebraloddjobs.edublogs.org/2006/01/11/online-planning-calendar/ Zoundry lets you know if the post is to be replaced or added as new. I definitely have to update the blog client tests, especially to outline which clients retrieve posts, replace posts, save (download) posts, etc.

Live Writer adds code which is stripped by WordPress and with it the image.

Let me find the screenshots and I’ll post them on the calendar test

Just to help you with the mental model, it doesn’t “delete” the other post, it just updates it with the correct date. It just so happens that your WordPress install is configured to let the post URL reflect the publish date, so the old URL breaks. If you were to update the Slug value, that’s another way to get the URL to change.

To prove my point, see that the post has always been available at this URL, which directly points to the post ID.

Some people find this confusing intially (and it tends to be the more technical people), but once you’re actually *using* Writer rather than just testing, you’ll probably find that our behavior (modifying the existing post whenever possible) is almost always the one you want.

If you look at the HREF of your tag, you’ll see that it begins with “//”, not “http://”. That’s definitely not a Writer bug–is it a typo in the comment, or is that actually the way the original post looked?

  • 7    CB // Jul 17, 2007 at 9:26 pm

You are correct that modifying a post would want to replace the existing post (but keep the same date because that acts as the slug). I suspect I was intent on copying and posting as a new post (copy) and missed the point. (have mind, will wander)

The image originally was correctly configured (http://). It shouldn’t be a typo because I cut and pasted.

I’ll see if I can duplicate this later.
